Our History:

Its name may be Modern Hardware, but this company has a rich history behind it and offers much more than just hardware. The company was originally established in 1924 at its current location in Grand Rapids, under the name Oakdale Fuel & Materials. Over the years, Modern Hardware's offerings grew and changed with the times, from coal and building materials to builders' supplies, decorative hardware and fireplaces.

The company has been Family-owned and operated since the early 1970's. Now in it’s second-generation, it is currently owned by Elaine Dreyer and her husband Rick, along with her brother and sister-in-law, Robert and Vicki Vander Lugt. As one might expect from a family-run business, Modern Hardware has always offered a personal touch when it comes to shopping, and a pledge to "treat customers with honesty and integrity".

At Modern Hardware you'll find the largest selection of door and cabinet hardware, towel bars and matching accessories in West Michigan. With thousands of items in stock and thousands more available by special order, you're sure to find hardware to fit your decor and budget. Our knowledgeable design-oriented consulants will assist you in selecting what you need, whether it's one knob or an entire house full of hardware. Modern will walk you through the selection process for your new home or remodeling project. We will work closely with your builder and designer, coordinating the hardware process and even offer installation services.

Modern currently has two locations to serve you. The Grand Rapids Michigan store, offers a decorative hardware showroom and a full line hardware store, where you can find anything from a single screw to power tools and paint. Our second location is in Holland Michigan, where our focus is on decorative and builders hardware, with a beautiful showroom and an inventory of other supplies like drawer slides and hinges.

Both locations also offer a complete line of wood burning and the very popular gas direct-vent fireplaces from industry leaders Heat & Glo and Heatilator. Our showrooms are filled with burning displays, so you can see the realism and feel the warmth. Whether building a new home or updating an existing fireplace. Modern Hardware is also well equipped to work with builders and contractors. In addition to stocking everything needed on the job site, from drawer slides to hand tools to adhesives, Modern Hardware also provides delivery service, job counts and installation assistance.
